Asteria Suede
The finest Asteria™ Suede
What is Asteria™ Suede?
Developed completely bespoke by us for the perfect unlined shoe, our Asteria suede leathers are sourced from the best tanneries in Southern Italy and use only a prime selection of Mediterranean lambs. The leathers are specifically hand selected & slowly tanned by our artisanal family run tanneries. A slow tannage that uses traditional ingredients and no aggressive chemicals and that allows the skins to take their time and dry naturally is the secret to the unique properties of this suede. This type of Asteria Leather is a “Suede mastery” and can only be used to handcraft loafers individually as every suede we use is subtly soft and unique.
As the leathers are left treated as little as possible to leave them with their original natural properties, each skin has a slightly different tension. It is impossible to create such a loafer through mass machine production due to the skill required to pull the leather over the last to create the perfect fitted loafer.
Our very own Asteria suede is made on the reverse of a full grain skin so that on the inside of our shoes we can directly show the natural full grain side without having to stiffen the shoe by adding a layer of lining leather. There is nothing off the shelf about our Asteria suede. Instead, this leather is specifically refined for the perfect unlined shoe.
We give the name “Asteria” only to those leathers that reach an extreme level of softness combined to a high degree of resistance, up to the point of eventually not needing any lining when making shoes. This creates a bespoke-like fit from your very first wear.
Why use Asteria™ Suede?
Our Sagan Classic line of loafers is exclusively handcrafted using our Asteria suede. Its unique unlined nature allows the shoe to naturally stretch and adapt to the wearer whilst maintaining a luxurious velvety nap that is also unmatched in its softness to touch. By creating a shoe which is uniquely unlined, combined with our very soft suede leathers, it allows the shoe to truly mould towards the shape of your foot while wearing, providing the utmost comfort. The more one wears our Asteria suede loafers, the more perfectly it will form to the unique shape of your feet.
All our leathers are a natural material and are treated as little as possible to ensure the breathability and natural properties are retained. In our Asteria suede shoes, there is no need for any different widths or half-sizes, as they will merely form towards the shape and size of your feet to provide you with the ultimate comfortable fit.
Our Asteria suede Loafers remain breathable, soft and flexible, whilst also elegant and unequivocally comfortable.
How do you care for Asteria™ Suede?
Our shoes are designed to be easy going and require very little maintenance, but it is important to invest the time to care for your shoes. After heavy use, always allow your loafers to rest, inserting cedar wood shoe trees or newspaper to wick any sweat or moisture out of the leather. Once the shoes are completely dry, use a soft suede brush to lightly brush the suede without damaging the nap.
If you have dirt or mud on your suede shoes, make sure they are completely dry before gently brushing the suede in the same direction using a high-qualitysuede brush. This will remove the dirt from the suede fibers. A rubber brush for suede or a hard bristle brush can be used for more resistant dirt making sure to only to brush only in one direction from the back of the shoe towards the tip. Do not brush or scrub the suede vigorously as this will damage the fine suede hairs. This type of suede brush allows for a deeper clean without damaging the fine nap.
Why can you wear our suede shoes in the rain?
High quality suede is far more tough and water resilient than most might appreciate. Do not be misled by its soft velour like finish. Suede is water repellant and very easy to care for, once you know how.
If by any chance your shoes do get wet, you may roll-up some paper and insert it inside the shoes or use our cedar-wood shoe trees and let them dry at room temperature, away from any direct heat source.
All our Asteria suede loafers are pre-treated with a water-resistant layer. However, we would recommend reapplying a Super Invulnersuede spray, such as Saphir Medaille D'Or Invulner, every 6 months to ensure the suede is not damaged due to water exposure.
